The target language is a resource, not a methodology or a programme of work. On its own, it does not guarantee the progress and engagement of learners, though its effective use can play a vital part in supporting them.

Planning for greater target language usage by learners is a prime focus for developing practice.

  1. The department is aiming to develop learners’ spontaneous use of language in lessons. Will this be left to the individual teacher to develop, or will it be at the centre of curriculum planning?
  2. How much training and support will be needed to develop and sustain this work?
