MFL learning unit: Target language
Good practice
The following key elements make up a good practice model. Select the Resource button below and consider how best to use the observational checklist, then select the video clips in turn to analyse the way in which the use of the target language is sustained, supported and resourced so that learners gain full benefit. Audio transcripts are also available.
There are four features of good practice.
  1. Consistency: Learners benefit greatly when all teachers in a department adopt a consistent and coherent approach to target language use. Evidence of consistency exists when, for example: learners can discuss, give opinions, sing songs, and adopt conventions like 'English not allowed', as standard practice in all classrooms.
  2. Transparency: Learners can see the purpose behind activities that involve, for example: songs, pair work, arguments, using action and gesture.
  3. Raised expectation: Learners understand and appreciate the benefits of the no English rule.
  4. Sensing Value: Learners see their teachers promoting the cultural diversity of language through active, purposeful, helpful and effective examples.
