MFL learning unit: Modelling

In effective modelling, the teacher develops approaches and techniques to link learning objectives with learning outcomes. These are outlined below. Select the Resource button below for a modelling checklist. Use this when you select each video clip below in turn for illustrations of modelling in writing and shared writing tasks. Audio transcripts are also available.

The teacher's approach is to:

be specific about the task and the learning outcomes
invite contributions, questions and discussions
expect learners to listen or watch for limited periods of time (within concentration times).

The teacher develops modelling techniques by:

thinking aloud whilst speaking in the first person, to make decisions and processes explicit
slowing the process down, deliberately using subject-specific vocabulary (verb tenses, time phrases)
supporting with prompts, scaffolds and praise
giving opportunities for learners to practise the new skill while it is fresh in their memory to enable learners to become more independent in their learning.
