MFL learning unit: Questioning
Developing your practice
All learners, no matter how challenging, respond well to teachers who show an interest in them and in their opinions and ideas. The way questions are asked is central to their effectiveness. Phrasing the question carefully and listening to the response is vital if you are to engage the learner.

Planning a balanced sequence of questions of various types, within a positive and supportive climate encourages participation and learning.

You will need to know what successful outcomes you are looking for in order to achieve them, and you will employ strategies that engage and support learners in effective questioning sessions.

Select each of the four sample video clips opposite and analyse which elements of each teacher's questioning are proving most effective. Audio transcripts are also available.

You are now invited to select the Resource button to complete a short exercise that asks you to consider how to analyse an aspect of your questioning strategy.
