4. Transition to Key Stage 1

Progress to Year 2 (and the end of Key Stage 1)

The relationship between just one learning area and the Key Stage 1 outcomes is shown in this graph. Let's think about what this does and doesn't indicate about the relationship.

The relationship between the profile data and Key Stage 1 outcomes is still being developed and explored.

With average scores of just 3 across the area of learning, 30% of all children attain level 2+ in writing whilst 53% attain level 2+ in mathematics.

By the time these average scores have increased to 6 across the area of learning, 78% of all children attain level 2+ in writing and 92% attain level 2+ in mathematics.

It is of course misleading and wrong to think that communication, language and literacy is more important than other areas of learning in the Foundation Stage. Children must have a broad and rich experience across all six areas of learning. Children's physical development and their wider creativity are components in supporting communication, language and literacy. In addition a child assessment in communication, language and literacy only accounts for roughly a half of the Key Stage 1 outcomes seen.
