Introduction

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is a tool used by practitioners to document children's progress. It measures children's achievements during the Reception Year to the end of the Foundation Stage and:

• reflects the key role of skilful and well planned observations in providing reliable assessment information on young children;
• recognises the important contribution parents and children can make to assessment;
• sets out a way of summarising young children's achievements at the end of the Foundation Stage and provides important information for parents and Year 1 teachers.

The profile is not solely a set of summative assessment criteria but rather a tool to help practitioners document what children know, understand and can do. Through observation, teachers document their children's achievements into different learning areas with assigned scales and scale points.
