1. Use of Early Years Foundation Stage data

Introduction

Early Years Foundation Stage data – The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Profile is a tool to help practitioners document what children know, understand and can do. Select the links to the left to find out more.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile reflects the wide range of informal assessments of children undertaken by teachers across the Early Years Foundation Stage and attempts to document them. It involves observing children at work and play, making notes about what they have achieved. It is used to communicate these observations to parents and carers in order to involve them with their child's progress while receiving feedback about achievements.

Most data collected is used to meet the assessment needs of the Reception teachers. Profile data will form the basis for local authority targets to improve outcomes for young children and narrow gaps between them. It may be used to make comparisons between different areas, however there are no plans for targets at school or child level.

The profile plays a major role in monitoring progress of children, evaluating performance and forming a bedrock for preparation for Key Stage 1. This unit will focus on the needs of individual schools, their headteachers and their governors in terms of data analysis while using the profile.
